MQ309A gas sensor is a part of the MQ sensor family series infamous for the timely detection and identification of flammable and hazardous gases. The module can detect flammable gas (CH4) and poisonous gases (CO) in the range of 300 - 10000ppm. Its most common application is in the field of domestic gas leakage alarms and detectors with a high sensitivity to propane and smoke. The sensing material is SNO₂ for which the conductivity is lower in clean environments and higher when smoke or flammable gas is present. A simple circuit makes measuring this change in conductivity and turning it into data fairly straightforward, but does require some calibration.
MQ309A gas sensor offers a wide array of features such as ESD protection and overvoltage protection. The sensor is easily interfaceable with all kinds of microcontroller units such as Arduino, NodeMCU, Raspberry Pi, etc. The modular version of MQ309A comes with a Digital Pin which allows this sensor to operate even without a microcontroller and which is very useful when you are only trying to detect a certain class of gas.
